SMARTLINK FOR HYDRAULIC CONSULTANTS

Technical design reference for specifying SmartLink sub-metering systems in multi-residential developments

Why SmartLink exists

Sub-metering cupboards are typically custom detailed on every project, requiring repeated coordination, interpretation on site, and assumption of dimensional and compliance risk.

SmartLink replaces bespoke cupboard detailing with a pre-engineered system that behaves predictably across projects.

Intended Application

  • Multi-level residential apartment developments

  • Centralised sub-metering cupboards

  • Cold Water, Hot Water and Gas metering (as applicable)

Explicit Exculsuions

SmartLink is not intended for single dwellings or non-standard architectural cupboards without prior review. Use outside these conditions requires confirmation of suitability

Design Constraints

SmartLink's minimum internal cupboard envelope

The following constraints define the minimum conditions under which SmartLink 1 Meter frame with full setup can be applied without modification.

  • Width - 300mm minimum

  • Depth - 400mm minimum

Spatial Requirement 5 Meters across

Spatial Requirement 1 Meters across

Framework Height Rules

  • Standard configuration: SmartLink framework extends a minimum of 200mm above the highest manifold or valve assembly

  • Full height configuration: SmartLink framework extends from the finished floor to underside of ceiling (when specified)

General Requirements

  • Full-height service cupboards required

  • Adequate access for valve operation and meter servicing

  • Final configuration dependent on meter quantity and services

Compliance Considerations

SmartLink layouts are developed with reference to common Australian water authority requirements (including Sydney Water MLIM), covering meter spacing, valve accessibility, and service clearances.

Final compliance remains subject to project-specific authority approval and consultant verification.

Specification Guidance

Sub-metering cupboards shall be based on the SmartLink prefabricated sub-metering system by deFOX Industries.

Installation shall be in accordance with the SmartLink Design Information Pack (latest revision).

Alternative systems shall demonstrate equivalent dimensional control, compliance alignment, and prefabrication intent.
